Applied Arts Scotland (AAS) and Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (NSCAD) have collaborated over the past year to facilitate the exchange of ideas between makers in old and new Scotland through the Shift project.
Background: This project will bring together a diverse group of Scottish and Canadian designers and makers to talk, explore ideas and inspire one another. Coming together they will investigate one another’s identity, environment, influences, skills, experience, materials and techniques. Through discussion and experimentation over a year each participant will consider how this has stimulated a shift in the emphasis, direction or focus of their practice. The project themes for 2019/20 are Identity, Sustainability and Collaboration. The model for this project will be based on Emergent’s Shift exchange programme that took place in 2017/18 and successfully brought Scottish and Icelandic makers together to create new work, both collaboratively and individually, and to explore new products, processes, markets and techniques. Outcomes from the collaboration will be shown in 2021 in Scotland and Canada.
