Applied Arts Scotland’s ‘Distance’ project was about exploring virtual reality tools for applied artists’ practice (https://www.appliedartsscotland.org.uk/projects/distance-project/). The eleven participants all had such different approaches leading to fascinating outcomes.
As a user of digital technology for 3D modelling and 3D printing, I am very interested in understanding how tacit knowledge, gained through physical hand making, influences the way we design and create in virtual space. A big difficult topic! I tackled this by videoing my act of designing in virtual reality, and then using the footage to revisit this activity to observe my decision making process, recall my thoughts about what I was doing and thinking, in order to decipher both the implicit and tacit knowledge involved.
The next challenge was making the forms created fit for 3D printing as this is for me an important outcome, which is applying new knowledge and skills to practical ends.

Once the item is purchased the maker will be in touch to arrange delivery of the item if it cannot be collected at Custom Lane on Sunday 11th June between 12pm-4pm.
