Gracious Preservations: A Coat for Adelheit

Description

This Tibetan-style coat incorporates panels of handwoven fabric which were woven during the COVID-19 pandemic. The structure of the fabric is based on sound recordings of handwashing as protection against infection, with adaptations and manipulations to personalise it to my great-great-grandmother Adelheit Schubert.
Adelheit was sent to India in 1876 to marry the widowed husband of her older sister and work with him at the Moravian missions along the Indo-Tibetan border. The title of this piece comes from a diary entry of her husband’s: “There were so many gracious preservations from danger that the recollections of this journey are truly a page of memory which my dear wife would not, on any account, be deprived of.” In 1891 he died in an outbreak of typhus, but Adelheit, though she became very sick, was again graciously preserved.
