In 2013 / 2014 Applied Arts Scotland (AAS) partnered with the Scottish Artists Union (SAU) on a series of four roadshows across Scotland. It was an opportunity for the organisations to provide an engaging professional development programme of speakers and to provide current and future visual and applied arts members with an update on what they have to offer the sectors.
Under one roof – Art/Design Crossovers
Sculptor David Murphy provided an insight to his commission with textile designer Catherine Aitken for the new Sutherland / Hussey designed Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. David spoke about the design process and challenges Catherine and he faced and answered questions about their practice.
The event was supported by Spring Fling and held at Gracefield Arts Centre on 21 January 2014.
Supporting Your Practice: A Networking Event for Artists and Makers
An opportunity for artists and makers to gather after Cultural Enterprise Office‘s Approaching Galleries & Pricing Work workshop to gather and hear from:
- Scottish Borders based artist Andrew Mackenzie about his personal experience of working as an artist.
- Rowena Comrie, President of the SAU about their Membership, member survey results, Rates of Pay guidance, and the Public Entertainment License (PEL) reforms and research
- Inge Panneels, former Chair of AAS, who spoke about the organisation’s long term plans and conversations with key partners, providing an update of recent projects
The event was supported by the Creative Arts Business Network (CABN) and held at Heart of Hawick on 18 June 2013.
Selling Your Work Not Your Soul
An event offering applied artists and designers living and working in Fife practical tips on making the selling of their work painless and enjoyable. Speakers included master milliner and internationally renowned textile artist Jeanette Sendler, illustrator, printmaker and occasional shopkeeper Kirsty Thomas of Lovely Pigeon, glass artist Inge Panneels who runs Idagos Glass and Louise Trow Creative Economy Development Officer at Fife Cultural Trust.
The event was supported by Fife Cultural Trust and held at the Jeanette Sendler’s Big Cat Textiles Studio in Newburgh on 28 May 2013.
The Craft of Making
A practical exploration of manufacturing and production methods including new technologies for artists, designers and makers keen to collaborate or share and develop making skills. Speakers included designer Katy West, Fi Scott from Make Works, glass artist Inge Panneels (and former Chair of AAS) who runs Idagos Glass and artist Janie Nicoll from the Scottish Artists Union.
The event was supported by and held at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s National Centre for Design and Architecture on 22 May 2013.
