Makers in Applied Arts Scotland’s Closing the Loop research group exhibit new works in |MATTER| Earth, Materials + Making at the Barn Arts in Aberdeenshire, part of their crafting interconnections season.
The works explore environmental wellbeing through making; drawing on craft practices that value and respect natural resources, waste materials, biodiversity and production systems.
Group members, all Applied Arts Scotland Members practising professionally in Scotland, from the rural Highlands & Islands and Scottish Borders to the cities of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Dundee have spent the last two years developing a collection of exploratory works drawn from a diverse range of dynamic, resourceful and ecological approaches.
The group regularly meet online and recently participated in a micro-residency at Hospitalfield where they shared good practice and exchanges skills and boxes of materials from their own practices to encourage, support and inspire one another, and ultimately amplify their vision for environmentally considered craft in the future.
By way of an introduction to the exhibiting makers, their practices, materials and to tease you to go to the Barn to see the final works, here is a taste of their processes and works in progress.

“This exhibition is an exciting insight into the Closing the Loop groups activity since it started back in 2020. A group of 12 resourceful and conscious makers exploring and skill sharing are now presenting some of their research and discoveries as well as hosting engagement activities with the local community in North East Scotland. We are really pleased to be able to do this in collaboration with the Barn and with help from the National Lottery Together for our Planet Fund.”
