Applied Arts Scotland Altermatter project will feature in a seminar at the Indonesian Nusantara Festival “Roots of Resilience: Harnessing Indonesia’s Local Wisdom for Climate Solutions and Sustainability” on Thursday 6 June 2024 at Glasgow University.

The event is organised by the Indonesian Student Association of Greater Glasgow and the seminar will spotlight the significant role of Indonesia’s rich traditional knowledge and practices in addressing global climate change and promoting sustainability.

Altermatter is a collaborative partnership between Applied Arts Scotland, British Council Indonesia, Playo and the CAST Foundation in Indonesia which explores experimental approaches to making, with a focus on using and adapting design processes combined with material experimentation.

Two AAS Members, Sarah Diver Lang and Dr Xingyu (Chloe) Tao, who participated in the latest version of the project, Altermatter2, will talk about their experiences and the work they developed.

Chloe will discuss TRICORAL, a modular public furniture, utilising plastic waste retrieved from the Indonesian marine environment. It tackles ocean plastic pollution and its negative impacts on the Coral Triangle in Indonesia. The Coral Triangle hosts an astonishing amount of marine life, which is currently under threat by climate change and requires action. The product aims to raise awareness about the environmental issue of ocean plastic and engage both Indonesians and tourists to learn about the Coral Triangle and take action to protect the biodiverse coral reef systems. The modular system provides great adaptability and usability.
