Ann Marie Shillito

Ann Marie Shillito: contemporary designer maker/jeweller, honorary research fellow Edinburgh College of Art, author of the book ‘Digital Crafts: Industrial Technologies for Applied Artists and Designer Makers’, founder/CEO of Anarkik3D Ltd, a software development company.

I now use 3D digital technologies to create my jewellery. In 1989 with a Scottish Development Agency grant I researched laser-cutting refractory metals and learnt 2D computer aided designing (CAD) for small batch production. In 1997 with a Scottish Arts Council Individual Development award I moved onto 3D digital designing and 3D printing as tools for limited production.

As I struggled with 3D CAD my practice-led Research Fellowship at Edinburgh College of Art (1999) to find out why resulted in major funded projects (2000-2006) investigating 3D virtual touch (haptics) as a better interface for working digitally in 3D. I was Principle Investigator and in 2007 jointly founded Anarkik3D Ltd, a software development company.

I use my knowledge as a practicing designer maker collaborating with computer scientists and programmers to develop Anarkik3DDesign, our 3D haptic modelling software for applied artists and designer makers for how we think and work. I love using our programme for designing jewellery and send selected digital models to commercial service companies to be 3D printed in a variety of materials. For Lockdown, I have been exploring 3D printing on fabric using Anarkik3D’s desktop printer.
