Hazel Frost

I am an emerging ceramic artist, based in Edinburgh. I studied ceramic design at Central St Martins, graduating in 2013. Since then I have developed my skills through working at various studios and potteries, including working for potter Stuart Carey and ceramic artist Jacob Van Der Beugel. Currently I am establishing my own studio with fellow ceramicist Natalie J Wood.

All of my work is hand built in Edinburgh, my practice is divided between throwing on the potter’s wheel and coil building.

I look to create balanced vessels, using several different clay bodies, from porcelain to foraged clay to create pieces that are varied, but altogether cohesive. As a ceramicist I am always drawn to the material itself, exploring the behaviour of each clay body and the resulting transformation within the kiln. I have recently extended my practice to include smoke firing vessels.

I draw on an exploration of the slow geological processes, the movements of the earth that create the clay I work with. Surrounded in Scotland by sweeping landscapes and harsh terrain, there is an endless well of inspiration and by using found materials, a sense of place within the pots I create. Over the last year I have been lucky enough to work with Vacheron Constantin, to create permanent artworks within their Edinburgh boutique.

I am currently working on a research project with my studio partner, Natalie J Wood, to explore sustainable waste practices in ceramic studios.
