As a mother and a designer, I wanted to make things that have a positive impact on future generations. I grew up in Finland, seeing materials used over and over again in the hands of my grandparents and parents. Graduating as a knitwear, designer specialising in kidswear, meant that I had to think outside the box. How would I create long lasting clothing for children, that quickly grow out of their clothing? I created the recently launched Convertibles kit, to get conversation going about long-lasting clothing, care for clothing, as well as, most importantly, the process of making clothing and the learning in craft. Inspired by early childhood theorists Montessori, Froebel and Reggio Emilia, my knitwear invites children to participate in the making of their own clothing. I want to share traditional craft skills and empower future generations and learn by making, creating and tinkering their own clothing. I knit most of the time in my Edinburgh studio and regularly tutor in the field of sustainable design and knitted textile techniques.
