Thread Counts Support Systems

Thread Counts explores what a flourishing ecosystem would look and feel like for textile makers in Scotland. There are a number of ways for textile makers and their supporters to get involved in the research project.

An understanding of what support systems in Scotland exist and how they are experienced will be informed firstly by textile makers’ responses to the two part Maker Survey. Secondly, the Project Team have created an initial list of support systems which we wish to build on via contributions from supporters of textile makers. The first edition of the list is a starting point which can be grown and enriched with industry knowledge, experience and expertise.

Support systems research will be brought together along with the results of the Maker Survey in workshops at which textile makers will ‘dream big’ about what could come next; how an ideal textile ecosystem would look and feel for makers, and how we can make Scotland a place where small-scale makers can flourish.

The Project Team’s support systems research (ordered alphabetically by Organisation Name) is gathered from data already published in the public domain. Please contact us to edit or remove data. The above list was last published on 16 September 2026.

As Thread Counts‘ research develops, so will the list of support systems for textile makers in Scotland. The list will be live, and be enriched and have increased representation with contributions from supporters of textile makers based in Scotland who:

  • share their textile making knowledge solely as a paid employee in a formal education setting (Further Education or Higher Education)
  • work with or support textile makers but don’t make textiles themselves
  • make textiles solely within a larger organisation, where the work they make is on behalf of the organisation

Textile makers are also welcome to contribute to the list.

Share your contributions below or alternatively, contact the Project Team to discuss additions, edits, updates or removals.

Thread Counts is supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.
